Thoughtful support to help you donate with clarity and confidence
If you’re considering becoming an egg or sperm donor, you may be asked to complete a psychological evaluation as part of the screening process. This is a standard and supportive step—not a judgment or barrier, but a chance to make sure you’re well-informed, emotionally prepared, and fully equipped for the donation journey.
These evaluations are conducted by licensed psychologists and follow ethical guidelines outlined by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). My goal is to make the process feel respectful, transparent, and supportive from start to finish.
What to Expect
- A Thoughtful Clinical Interview
We’ll talk about your background—family, relationships, education, work, current stressors, and any personal or mental health history. We’ll also explore your understanding of the donation process, and any thoughts, hopes, or concerns you might have about the short- and long-term implications.
- Standardized Psychological Testing
You’ll complete a psychological assessment such as the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI). This helps us better understand your emotional functioning, personality traits, and readiness for donation. It’s not about passing or failing—it’s about ethical care and protecting everyone involved.
- Clear, Informed Consent
We’ll ensure you have a solid understanding of the medical procedures, potential risks, and possible outcomes—such as future contact with donor-conceived individuals or the emotional impact on yourself and your relationships over time.
- When Donation May Not Be the Best Fit
Sometimes, psychological evaluations bring up concerns that suggest donation might not be the right path right now. This could include unmanaged mental health conditions, substance use concerns, or other high-risk factors. If that happens, I’ll offer supportive referrals to help you access the care you need.
Why These Evaluations Matter
- To Support You, the Donor
Donating is generous and meaningful, but it also comes with emotional weight. These evaluations are here to make sure you’re in a strong, supported place to move forward.
- To Consider Future Children
The process also involves thinking about the potential impact on donor-conceived offspring, including emotional well-being and inherited mental health risks.
- To Keep the Process Smooth & Ethical
By addressing potential concerns early, these evaluations support a clear, respectful, and positive donation experience for everyone involved.
If you’re considering donation, know that you’re not expected to have all the answers. This evaluation is a chance to pause, reflect, and ask any questions you have in a safe, supportive space.
If you’re ready to get started or just want to know more about what to expect, I’d be happy to talk.
